Harvest

It isn't shaping up to be a great year for gardening. The weather has been unseasonable cool and while we humans aren't complaining, our garden isn't thrilled. That, and I've come to realize that I must never again try to grow tomatoes from seeds. Really. Remind me of that next spring.

In the foreground, on the left, are the potato buckets. Right in front of them are two pepper plants but you can barely see them because of the potato foliage. Behind the potatoes, on the left, are the tomatoes I bought as transplants. To the right, in the front of the raised beds, are teeny tiny tomato plants grown from seed. Yeah. I'm writing this a few weeks after the picture was taken and they're *still* tiny, while the transplants are even bigger now and bearing fruit. But at least the cucumbers (back of the raised bed, growing up the trellis) are doing well.

Anyway, it's not a lush jungle, but it's not too bad. And we've gotten a very modest harvest to crow about.

First the potatoes. I planted five buckets of potatoes but not all at once. One was planted a few weeks before the rest so it was ready for harvest first. It was just a plain old store bought red potato that I let sit too long. And this is what we got! Are those tiny ones cute or what? I ate one raw and then mashed the rest up for dinner.

But the other day we finally got some cucumbers. Yum.

Owen had his plain, with the peels cut off. Mine I ate with a sweet dressing made from equal parts vinegar, olive oil and sugar. Bridget doesn't like cucumbers but she'll be a happy camper once the tomatoes ripen.
