Spring!

(sorry about the formatting - what can I say except sometimes blogger is annoying)

We went to Branchbrook park in Newark yesterday to see the cherry blossoms. It was us and 4 other families, 14 kids in all. After some initial confusion with the directions (WHY can't they be more straightforward on the website? The park is 4 miles long, you can't just have one set of directions!) we arrived and set about to having a great time.

I think everyone in this shot was one of us. We walked, we played. The kids had fun with cattails. I had a good time chatting about video games with two of the older boys and chatting with my mom friends. There was also cake (it was the birthday of one of the moms). Owen ate four pieces!

There was a bit of drama when the kids saw a wounded cat trying to climb up a hill. After trying unsuccessfully to call someone, I flagged down a motorcycle officer to help (that's him calling animal control).

We arrived home to find a tiny fluffy white dog peeing in our ivy. We've met this dog before. Actually, we've already escorted him home twice before (and they never even know he's gone). Bridget hopped out of the car to get him but he started barking at us, which is new. He also didn't have a collar this time so I wasn't sure how we'd get him. We sort of herded him back toward his house and all was going well until he suddenly turned and started chasing Bridget. Man, that girl can run, LOL! She took off with the dog after her and disappeared around the block.

Robert came in around then and Owen and I got in the car to go looking for Bridget and the dog.

Ok, this is the part where those of you who teach your kids not to talk to strangers should probably avert your eyes.

So we get around the corner and there's Bridget walking back toward our street with some guy. The guy has the dog on a leash. Bridget tells me "This man helped me get the dog" and the guy tells me he knows the dog, has caught it a few times before himself. So he and Bridget continue on back to our street and Owen and I drive around the other way to meet them. When we pull in the driveway, Owen jumps off and goes after them. Finally, the dog is delivered safely home (again, they didn't even know he was out!). They thank us, we thank the man, and finally we go home.

At this point, the kids - Bridget in particular - are HOT! So this scene followed ;-)

And the day ended with ice cream sundaes to celebrate Bridget's half birthday (which was actually last week but we totally forgot).

Of course somehow, despite sunblock, we all ended up with mild burns. I went to bed slathered in aloe :-) No biggie. From my perspective, it was one of the best days we've had in awhile ;-)

Wow! That's a lot of animal excitement for one day!

Happy Half Birthday, Bridget:)
