NYC

We went to NYC on a whim on Saturday. It started out horrible, got better, got bad, got good - yeah, it was odd. It started with me waking up in a horrid mood and I almost ruined the day but I got better. Um, sort of.

Anyway, the first thing we found out is that the trip to NYC is a LOT harder on the weekend. Usually we have Robert take the day off and we go during the week. Other than making sure we miss rush hour, it's a lot less crowded during the week. Saturday, the traffic was bad (the bus trip took probably twice the time though to be fair, the bus driver took an unexpected stop and switched drivers for some reason), the subway was horribly crowded and the Powers That Be decided to use the weekend to repair some subway lines so since the C trains weren't running the plans we had in mind suddenly got very, very complicated. So we changed plans.

We were planning to go to the Castle in Central Park but went to Columbus Circle instead. I don't think I've ever been there but we had a really good time.

There were awesome street performers called the Transformerz (this shot is cool enough but they did a lot of stuff that was even better that we didn't get pictures of because we were too busy gaping). But if you click here you can see a video on YouTube someone else put up (around 3 minutes 30 seconds you'll see the move that first got our attention!).

There was also some rock climbing,

an impromptu horse and carriage ride and a playground and some ice cream were shoved in there somewhere.

On the way home, in Port Authority, we saw these really cool (and loud) performers. Bridget took a video but for some reason we didn't get any sound. They wore tap shoes and were pounding away on that piece of wood, so the sound was the main thing. the guy in blue is currently dancing. The woman in gray/white was my favorite though. The man on the right, in the reddish shirt, sitting down (right behind Bridget's head) was drumming away on a wooden box. He also had metal rattles attatched to his shoes.

And finally, we saw this exhibit in Port Authority. Bridget really liked it and we hung around for about 20 minutes while she read the placards and we looked at the masks. (can you see Owen in the picture too?)

So it was a nice day. I'm not sure about weekend NYC trips again though. On the plus side, the street performers are out, but on the negative side, like I said, the traffic on the trip there and the crowding in the subways (compared to the middle of the day on a weekday when we usually go) was really annoying. Still, we had a good time in the end.
