I'm knitting! I had a playdate with my friend Joan today (oh, our kid's played too :). Joan knits so I brought my knitting needles to see if she could show me how. I tried to learn to knit a year ago but it was just too hard and I got bored and gave up. I haven't touched the needles in about a year but recently decided to give it a go again. Well, I sat down, asked her to show me one thing and next thing I know I'm knitting. Weird! It was like my fingers knew what to do and it wasn't hard and awkward like last time. I guess I just needed to walk away for awhile and let my brain rest.

Of course I'm knitting left handed. Ok, yeah, I remember this from last time. Apparently when my left handed grannie tried to teach me to knit, oh, 30 years ago, it must have stuck in my head. A year ago I gave a shot at right handed knitting and it just felt wrong. So very wrong. Maybe it has something to do with me being a crocheter too. I don't think I'm doing it exactly right either. Maybe I'm just knitting all fakakta. Eh, I'm having fun and the end result looks good so I'm happy :)

Meanwhile Owen is on a workbook kick. Bridget was into them when she was younger too. Last night Bridget wanted to play Mancala and I knew I needed to find something to occupy Owen or else we'd have trouble. I grabbed an activity book my dad gave Owen for his birthday (it was a birthday book thing - said something about being 5 on the front). I sat him down at the table with some crayons and Bridget and I set to playing. Four games later (I won three of them and boy was she pissed! - unfortunately I don't know the game well enough to lose on purpose!) Owen had finished half the book. He loved it. This morning he wanted to do more and this afternoon he finished it and asked for another workbook. Unfortunately for him, about a year ago I finally got rid of all the kiddie workbooks figuring that neither of my kids would ever want them again. Ooops. I found one that was half done already and he did some of that. I told him tomorrow on the way home from the library we can stop at Walgreens and get him another one.

Also today, Joan's son introduced the kids to Club Penguin. Both kids enjoy it but, as usual, Bridget is in obsession mode. She gets this way with new things but I no longer worry. I know she'll be glued to the computer for a few days and then it will fade away. Today we got home from Joan's and they both sat down to play. Then Owen did his workbooks and she still played. Owen was read to for 1/2 an hour and she still played. Owen played two board games with me and she still played. Owen played some online games at a different site and she still played. Owen is now sleeping and she's still playing. Ok, she took a little break somewhere in there to run around the house a bit and I did suggest she jump on the trampoline some, but other than that, Bridget's glued to the computer for now.

We don't have any plans for the rest of the week other than going to the library tomorrow. We seem to be entering a sparse social patch. The other day I was telling my mom about all the friends we have leaving the state or country this summer. Bridget chimed in that it meant she was going to be bored and have "no one to play with" all summer. Sigh. It's a bit true too. It's not just the people going traveling. We also have 3 families we are friends with who, for various personal reasons, are just not available for playdates right now. Yeah, it's looking bleak. I might have to actually (gasp!) get out there and meet some new people so we don't end up smothering the friends who are staying in NJ this summer.

Or else we'll all just play Club Penguin til our eyeballs fall out ;-)
