It's a little busy over here!

It's like feast or famine when it comes to friends and activities! I guess the last week has been making up for the Famine of July '07.

I was a bit down the other week (ya think?). Out of desperation one day I got on a local email homeschool list and begged someone to play with us. As a result of that plea, first we had a Sunday playdate with a family we really hit it off with. Then last wednesday we went to a playground with two families we knew already and 3 brand new families (a great time was had by all!). And then yesterday we went to the zoo with a different set of 3 new families. That means in the past week we've met 23 new kids and 7 new moms. How cool is that?

Yesterday was a busy day all around. First thing in the morning we went to the library to see a magician. He was incredible. He's a comedic magician and the kids and adults were all laughing our butts off. The library had a table set with magic books on it and afterward each of my kids picked out one to take home.

We hung around the library for awhile and got home to find that our email list was discussing whether or not to go to the zoo because of the heat. It was in the 90's but the heat index was supposed to be 100. It was hot, yes, but it didn't feel that bad to me and a few others so four of us met up and had a blast. The kids got along, as did the moms and nobody collapsed of heat stroke :-D

Then that night, still not really thinking it was as hot as everyone said it was, the boy and I went to the school field down the road and played racquetball. Thankfully he let me play by myself for awhile because Owen's way of playing is to throw the ball, try desperately to hit it, run after it, lose it in the grass, finally find it and throw it all over again. Unfortunately, after not too long he managed to get his ball stuck up on the school roof. Rather than risk the last ball (the third was lost last week) we put away the racquetball equipment and played kickball instead.

And then today was sort of weird. Early this morning there was an incredibly loud and intense thunderstorm (that woke me up and kept me up far too long) followed by a torrential downpour. Seriously, it sounded like Niagara Falls. Robert left for work and 5 hours later called me, saying he had given up on making it in and was not having much luck getting home. Apparently the bus took twice the usual time to get into the city because of flooding and then when he got there, the subways weren't running. Not just his train - none of them were running at that stop. So he gave up and headed home only to find that the buses were now having trouble so he took the train (the regular train - not the subway) and we picked him up at the station (the bus stop is an easy walk to the house but the train station is a lot farther).

So what do you do when your husband is home unexpectedly and it's again in the 90's? Go to the park and ride bikes of course.

I do NOT know what's going on with me lately. I used to hate heat, but it just isn't bothering me any more. Yeah, it was hot, yeah, I was sweaty, but Bridget and I rode bikes all over the park and had a really nice time. I took a short break to play tag with Owen and then we got back on our bikes to ride some more. We only lasted an hour or so when we ran out of the two bottles of water I had packed (which were both warm despite all the ice cubes I stuck in them) so we left. And yeah, I did notice there weren't that many people in the park (a park that is usually quite busy). But there were some people out. We weren't the only nuts.

When we got home (after a short trip to Target to drool over new bikes) Robert and Bridget jumped in the pool and Owen and I went shopping for last minute items for tomorrow's Solar Day we're running for our unschooling Roots & Shoots club. Whew!

We have nothing planned for Friday (except Bridget's play rehearsal), but next week Robert is taking a 5 day weekend and we're doing a day at the beach, Bridget's play performance and the allergist, all in a row. How did we get so busy? That's ok, we're having fun for now :-D
