Being Frugal if it kills me

A few years back our dryer broke. Not having much money at the time (at the time??? LOL!) we couldn't buy a new one. Some whining ensued and I began to hang our laundry. Robert put up a line in the house for rainy days and winter. We line dried everything for about 2 years (thankfully the boy was out of diapers already). Then my wonderful in-laws bought us a really nice used dryer for Christmas and I never looked back.

Til now. So I've decided to just suck it up and stop whining and start line drying again. Because our gas bill did go up noticeably after we got the dryer so I know it makes a difference.

I'm not going to be militant about it. If it's raining, I'll use the dryer instead of the basement line (because indoor line drying on rainy days takes forever). And I'll probably go straight to the dryer when the winter hits.

But on days like today when it's in the 50's sunny and windy, there is just no excuse.

Well, one excuse. I went to hang the sheets and realized I have no idea where the clothes pins are. I asked the kids, hunted around, called Robert, no body knows. So I decided there had to be a way to MacGyver it.

I went to the craft cabinet, hoping maybe I could find paperclips or something. Instead, I found something even better. A whole bag of magnetic clips with a few binder clips thrown in. I have no idea why we have these or where we got them from but eh, whatever.

Meanwhile, I went to freecycle and asked if anyone had any clothes pins. Not only does someone have a bag full they don't need, but they are dropping them off here this afternoon. I didn't even ask her to! But I have a cold and feel like crap so I was happy for the offer.

And here are the sheets, hanging in the beautiful, blue, sunny sky (ok, TOO sunny - my eyes are killing me right now), hung up with clips. Ok, not very MacGyver-y, but it makes me smile.

I grew up in a line-drying home. I've thought about going that route, but have lived in rentals where space / freedom to do that have been issues. I love the smell of sun-dried clothes / sheets!

BTW, your local Freecycle sounds SO much better than mine. You've had some great experiences which has made me jealous :-)

We had a clothesline at our old house years ago when the boys were babies, and I used it religiously, but for the last ten years we've been pretty reliant on the dryer. I DO hang clothes on nails in the sun room on nice days though. Proud of your frugality!

The Union county freecycle is great. VERY busy though so I have a folder just for the emails.

Topsytechie, ooo, now I want a sun room ;-)
