Body Politics

The other day I was trying on some old medieval outfits to find something for a costume for Halloween. I put on one dress and Owen said he didn't like it because it "makes you look fat". I laughed and said well Owen, I *am* fat, lol!

Oh my. He got this upset look on his face and told me I'm not fat, I'm beautiful and then he gave me a big hug, burying his face in my belly.

Ok, that's sweet. Nothing like love from your 7 year old son to make you all warm and mushy.

But I didn't realize he had bought into that line of thinking and I hate that he has. I explained to him that fat doesn't mean ugly, fat just means you have more fat on your body than some people. Beauty is subjective, so I'll take his word on that one ;-) But I am most decidedly fat. He didn't buy it.

I thought that just having a fat mother who *doesn't* sigh in front of the mirror and make self hating comments would go a long way but I guess it hasn't stood up to society in general. Instead we have the "YOU'RE not fat because I love you!" syndrome. Similar to the "Well, I'm talking about THOSE (fill in the name of the group you look down on), I don't mean YOU."

Just something to think on.
