Suki 11/26/2007 - 5/2/2009

Our little Suki rat died today. She had mycoplasmosis, a disease that almost all rats are exposed to and carry but that only affects some. The unlucky ones are more prone to respiratory diseases. Suki was always less adventurous and seemed more delicate than the others. I did suspect myco a few times but thought I was wrong because she never sneezed or coughed or things like that.

This past week we had had a heat wave (95 in April!) and a huge, nasty pollen dump that made my eyes water for days. Suki reacted rather badly to it. We took her to the vet who diagnosed myco (after listening to my description of her) and a secondary infection.

The thing about myco is that there is no cure and no vaccine. It's not preventable or treatable. You just live with it. But the secondary infections are usually bacterial so he gave her a shot of antibiotics in the office and sent us home with a combo of two antibiotics to give her twice a day.

She really seemed to be getting better. Thursday she was perking up and looking good. The labored breathing was gone, she was eating and climbing the cage and we really thought she was going to pull through.

I took this picture Thurday. I gave her a cashew and she carried it over to be next to Robert while she ate. She really looked good.

And then friday night we were going to bed and she looked tired. Saturday morning we shuffled Bridget out to Girl Scouts early and when I went to check on Suki, I could tell she was dying. I took her out, wrapped her in a towel and Robert and I took turns holding her until she died.

We buried her this afternoon after Bridget got home.

Here's the portrait Bridget drew for the grave.

Rest in peace sweetie.
