The whole "green" thing

So remember back in the 70's when the lines for gas were ridiculous? And they had those flags to tell you if you were allowed to buy any that day? My grade school had a group come by and give a presentation on energy and how we were going to use all the oil up someday. They talked about not just conserving, but also about how we needed to find more sustainable forms of energy (I remember someone on stage on a stationary bike that lit up a light bulb when he pedaled).

And then the energy crisis was "over" and we all went back to the way we were.

Yeah. Good times, good times.

Anyway, I came across this article today about how Jimmy Carter had solar panels installed on the White House. Then Regan got in and the crisis was over so he had them removed because yeah, why bother, right?

A few months ago the price of gas drastically fell. I still don't understand why. Now hey, it's great and I like cheap gas as much as the next American with a car, but it also made me wonder if everyone would forget about all the "green" stuff and alternative energy and all that. I mean, gas is cheap so why bother, right? Crisis over.

I hope we don't all do that again.

Yeah, they'll forget. SUV sales have risen some, people are driving more.... Won't be long, though, and they'll be forced to remember again, I think. Silly, short-sighted people.

I definitely remember, and then my lazy, cheapskate side kicks in and I am just so freaking grateful to be able to drive across town without going broke that I kind of lose sight again. Thanks for the nudge!
