The ever unschooled boy

I've been reading Calvin and Hobbes to Owen at bedtime lately. I don't think he gets half of them but he enjoys it and keeps asking for more.

The other night we were reading yet another one where Calvin didn't want to go to school.

Owen asked me why Calvin chose to go. The joke was about his mom convincing him he wanted to when he really didn't so I thought that's what Owen meant and explained the joke to him.

No, he wanted to know why Calvin had made the choice to go to school in the first place when he obviously didn't like it.

Oh.

Most of Owen's friends are homeschooled. He knows a few schooled kids but not many. But we do have one friend who made the choice to go to a really cool democratic school. Maybe that's what Owen meant.

I explained to him that it wasn't Calvin's choice. His parents made the decision and told him he had to go.

Wow, the look that kid gave me. So I stood up for Calvin's mom a bit and explained that a lot of parents don't know about homeschooling and think school is necessary. She's doing what she thinks is right when she makes him go.

I don't think Owen bought it. My kids seriously do not know how good they have it huh?
